This question has come up a few times, so we thought that we would address it here. There are several factors that affect where your product will show up in searches. They are typically:
1) Popularity - Combination of many factors, two of which are number of sales (dominant factor) and traffic (minor)
2) Relevance - How well the Title and Description match the search or category being viewed (For more on this see the section on writing excellent Titles and Descriptions).
3) Audit Delay - Delays up to several days may occur while your products are being reviewed, although typically this happens within 12-18 hours.
Keep in mind, when a product is new, its Popularity is ZERO. So two factors become very important in getting your design off of "ground floor". Relevance (writing a concise, accurate, and keyword laden title and description) and sales. Any sales you can generate on your own will go along way in increasing the popularity of your design, and in turn make it show up higher in the search listings.
The reasons for this are fairly obvious. If a customer is searching a topic for a design, designs that have traditionally sold well are likely to be better quality and more desirable. However, it does leave new designs struggling to get up off the Ground Floor. For this reason, we allow lists in categories to be sorted by "NEW". This will give New designs some artificial exposure, and help jump-start their popularity.
